Something else happened

“I should’ve said something.”, she thought. “Why didn’t I say something?”, she asked herself.  ‘Now I’ll never see him again.’ The words kept plaguing her mind.

Day 1

“We’re going to have so much fun here.” , said Emily as she looked at her friend Stephanie. “Of course we will, with me it’s always fun.” Stephanie answered with a giggle. Emily unpacked her stuff and as usually everything just ended up on a pile. “Well that looks organized.”, she said knowing her friend understood her sarcasm.

At the beach the two girls jumped into the water as soon as they laid eyes on it. “Cold!”, Stephanie exclaimed making a funny face. Emily laughed, “It’s fine.”, she said as she swum into the water. “You’re like a fish.” Stephanie said and made popped her lips up to make a fish-face.

“Are you ready?” Emily asked while she stood in front of the mirror to put her eyeliner on. “Yeah, wait, just a second.” her friend answered as she took her phone. “Now I’m ready.” she smiled, “let’s go.”

Day 2

“Let’s try to make friends.” Emily said as she looked around. Stephanie shrugged, “Em, you can do that if you want to.” “Don’t you want friends?”, Emily answered surprised. “Not really…” her friend said facing the ground. “Steph, are you afraid to talk to people?” Emily asked to tease her friend. Stephanie kept quiet. She felt uncomfortable just thinking about it. “Don’t you have a boyfriend?” Stephanie exclaimed to avoid the question. Emily already knew what the problem was with her friend but she didn’t want to give up. “Yeah, but you don’t Steph and it would be fun for you to have a summer love.”

“What do you mean I had to say ‘hi’?” Stephanie asked Emily who smiled. “Well the guy obviously thought you were pretty and tried to start a conversation.” Emily said as they both walked on the dark sand. “Why is no one as social as me around here? Is it that difficult to approach people?” she asked looking at the sky which was full of stars that night. Emily looked back at Stephanie. “Tomorrow, she said, tomorrow we will look for cute guys to be friends with.”

Day 3

“Why is it so difficult to talk to a cute guy?” Emily asked frustrated while she moved around in the water. “Because you are chasing them away.” Stephanie laughed at her friend. “Maybe at night we can make friends.”

“Ooooh he looks cute, don’t you think?” Emily whispered to Stephanie with a sparkle of excitement. “No, Steph answered, he has black hair, I don’t like guys with pure black hair.” “Come on Steph I’ve been trying to find a guy for you all night.” Emily said letting out a deep sigh. “You can keep looking.” Stephanie said with a stubborn look on her face.

“Did you see those two guys? The right one had wooshy hair.” Emily giggled as she looked at the guy. “The one with the glasses?, her friend asked, he looks like Mat.” “What? No, okay maybe a little. If he looks I’m going to wave. Should I? Yes I will.” Emily said hoping the guy would look her way and he did. She quickly waved and got a wave back from the guy. “Did you see that?, Emily asked surprised, he waved back.”

The days past fast and the girls hadn’t seen the guy at all mostly because they visited other places.

Day 6

“Let’s go out again tonight, maybe I’ll see the Mat lookalike again.” Emily said with enthusiasm. Stephanie smiled and nodded: “Sure.”

Stephanie blinked as she saw the guy again: “Isn’t that your Mat lookalike?”  “Where?”, Emily asked as she looked around trying to find him. “There, he’s walking alone.” her friend answered. “I see him. Yeah, why is he alone?” Emily thought out loud. Stephanie didn’t say anything wondering the same.

“He is still alone, I think you should ask him to walk with us.” Stephanie suggested, “you waved at him earlier again and he even said ‘hi’.” “You’re right., Emily said a bit unsure, but isn’t it weird?” Steph sighed: “Just ask him, he has been walking around alone for three hours now.”  “Fine.” Emily said as she started walking towards the guy. At that moment the guy took out his phone and started talking. Emily saw he was calling and she turned back to her friend but she knew the guy noticed what she did. Once she was walking next to Stephanie she kept telling her how embarrassed she was and how she shouldn’t have tried anything.

Later on the two girls were sitting by the beach and singing songs while enjoying the dark sky. When they got up to leave, three guys suddenly appeared. One of them approached Emily and flirted with her. Although she wasn’t in the mood for anything the guy kept trying to get her to like him. While talking Emily noticed the guy was lying to her and she tried making clear she didn’t want anything to do with him. Nevertheless he kept talking and closing the space between them. However Emily knew how to push him away with words. At the end the three guys left angrily because their tactics didn’t work out.

“You saw him too right?” Stephanie asked Emily making sure she wasn’t imagining things. Emily nodded: “Yeah the Mat lookalike came to us…but he probably saw those guys. He was still alone, we have to look for him.” Stephanie only nodded in agreement and followed Emily as they hurried through the people to find their Mat lookalike.

The girls kept looking for the guy until 2 am. Emily didn’t want to give up but Stephanie told her the guy probably went home. Emily realized waiting was pointless. She would never see him again, never know why he was alone and never know if he was going to talk to them that night on the beach.

Day 7

The girls were leaving the beach and returned home. Stephanie never talked on the way home and Emily was deep in thoughts while she looked out of the window.

“I should’ve said something.”, she thought. “Why didn’t I say something?”, she asked herself.  ‘Now I’ll never see him again.’ The words kept plaguing her mind.

She was full of regrets.
